HUDSONS CIRCUS CONTACTS:

THANKS FOR VISITING - NEW WEB SITE COMING SOON.

The following is a general overview about our Amazing Animals and their Welfare!

  ANIMAL WELFARE AT HUDSONS CIRCUS:

Because animals are an integral part of what we present to our audience, Hudsons Circus provides the highest

standard of care to our animal partners. Our animal trainers and carers consist of experts who have held senior

roles in many of Australia's largest zoos. They devote their lives to living, working with and caring for our

    animals 24 hours a day.

At each location, we provide large and spacious

outdoor yards and enclosures that are tailored to

suit each of our animal species. These exceed

government regulated standards for the housing

of circus animals and provide ample opportunity

for grazing, foraging, socialisation and protection

from adverse weather conditions. Our animal

accommodation can be viewed at all times by

   members of the public.

Our animals are transported between venues in our luxury purpose

built semi-trailer, which provides for optimum levels of comfort and

welfare. Each transport compartment has been rubber lined and

carefully designed to suit each individual animal species. Generally,

each move is a short trip between the towns we play and the animals

look forward to new surroundings and grazing opportunities when

                                                                                    they arrive.

We pride ourselves on the detailed care we give our animals. All our feed

is carefully selected to suit each individuals dietary needs and each animal

receives regular health checks and vaccinations. We groom our animals on

a regular basis, which helps to check them all over and builds on the strong

    bond between handler and animal.

Our animals are great performers, because their routines are

tailored to each ones natural abilities and individual preferences

which we observe during their playtime. Our animals are trained

through a system of reward and repetition and these behaviours

                                                                                            are linked together on cue

                                                                                            which ultimately becomes the

routine you see at the show.

Our animals perform for only a few minutes each show and the rest of the

time they are resting and socialising with each other.

                                                                                Our presentations give people of

all ages a unique opportunity to

                                                                                experience our beautiful animals

up close and personal. This close contact with live animals, especially

by young children helps to foster a greater appreciation for the natural

world and the beautiful creatures which we share this planet with.

OUR AMAZING ANIMALS:

BLUE and GOLD MACAW

Macaws are native to South America. There are 17 different species of

macaws ranging in various colours and sizes. Macaws can live for up

to 70 years. Macaws eat a variety of seeds, nuts, fruits and flowers.

The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild and a few

are extinct. Both our macaws have come from specialist macaw

                                                breeders here in Australia.

ARABIAN CAMEL

Camels are native to the dry deserts of northern Africa and the Middle East.

Australia has the largest population of feral camels than anywhere else in

the world, nearly 800,000! The average lifespan of

a camel is 40-50 years. Camels are very well

adapted to living in the desert. They have a double

row of long eye lashes to keep out sand and dust

and have soft feet that allow them to walk across

the sand with ease.  All our camels have come

from feral populations in central Australia. These individuals were spared

from a culling program currently in operation to reduce their numbers.

ASIAN WATER BUFFALO

Buffalo are native to South-East Asia. There is also a large feral population

in northern Australia. Water buffalo are a valuable animal for their hard

working ability in the ploughing and cultivation of

crops. There are 130 million domestic water buffalo

in the world and more humans depend on them than

any other working animal. The average lifespan of a

buffalo is 40 years. Our Buffalo came as youngsters

from a buffalo farm where they are raised for their meat and leather. Their long,

sweeping horns continue to grow well past adulthood and are used for defense against predators.

LIAMA

Llamas are native to South America and are widely used for guarding herds of

sheep. They are also popular as a pack animal as they can carry 20%-30% of their

bodyweight. Llamas can live for 20-30 years. Females give

birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of

11 ½ months (350 days). The name for a baby llama is a "cria ".

Our llamas have come from a llama farm in Victoria where they

are bred as guard animals and for wool. Llamas will only spit as

a means of defence. This "spit" has a foul odour because it

                                                        consists of regurgitated food.

WELSH MOUNTAIN PONY

The Welsh Mountain Pony originates from Wales in the United Kingdom.

They are the smallest of the 4 types of welsh breeds and do not exceed 12.2 hands.

Historically they were used for postal routes and in coal mines. Today, the modern

Welsh Pony are used for many equestrian discipline and pleasure riding. Our ponies

have come from a breeding stud in NSW. These types of ponies are commonly used

in circus liberty performances around the world because of their high level of

                                                         intelligence.

Thanks for reading the above about our animals, as they are our number one priority at all times!
